The Importance of Emergency Lights
Emergency lights are essential in any building, particularly those with high volumes of users. Our job at Exit Sign Warehouse is to ensure that you have the most up-to-date emergency lighting options available for your commercial buildings.
Hotels, restaurants, churches and schools all need exit lighting and emergency lights that are reliable and which conform to safety standards and regulations.
Older buildings that may not see a lot of foot traffic should also install emergency lighting so that people can easily exit damaged or unsafe buildings.
Are Emergency Lighting and Exit Lighting Different?
The term emergency lighting refers to battery-operated lights that start in the event of power outage in a building. All new buildings must have emergency lighting installed to meet with the standards set by the National Fire Protection Association(NFPA).
Exit lights show people where to exit a building and should be turned on during the day and night. It’s important that people who enter a building can easily see an exit sign from wherever they are.
When installing your emergency lights and exit lighting, it’s important to ensure you check with your local authority about building codes and standards.
Exit Sign Warehouse’s Emergency Lights
We have several emergency lightingoptions available for purchase and all are UL listed. This means that they have been approved for customer safety.
Our lights are all code compliant, are black or white in color, and have a 90-minute battery backup. They can be mounted in recess or surface areas.
Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lighting
Also known as solid state lighting, these lights use either a wedge-base lamp or PAR series system. Since the lighting is less harsh, these are quickly becoming more popular than incandescent bulbs, particularly in office buildings and eldercare establishments.
Unlike incandescent lights, LED lights are not hot to touch, and they use a solid object such as a semi-conductor. They use between 6 and 12 volts and consume much less power than alternative sources.
Batteries Needed for Emergency Lighting
Lead acid or NiCad batteriesare needed to operate emergency lighting. These specific lead acid batteries are rechargeable and more cost effective than the other modern rechargeable batteries.
The lead acid battery that powers the emergency lighting is called a VLRA or valve regulated lead battery. It’s a maintenance-free battery combined with uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS).
Wet cell Nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries (NiCad) can also be used for emergency lighting. They’re maintenance-free and they use a special low-pressure release valve. Another remarkable benefit is the production of greater energy density.
